We Have a Helper
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever…” John 14:16 ESV
There are certain things we never outgrow and always need—love, acceptance, encouragement, and care. And throughout our lives, in different seasons and for countless reasons, we will also need help. Yet in a culture that prizes independence and self‑sufficiency, admitting this can feel uncomfortable.
Still, being open about this universal need is not a weakness. It’s a sign of humility—an act of transparency and a willingness to be honest with ourselves, with others, and with God.
Throughout biblical history, God’s people recognized Him as their “Ever‑present Helper” (Psalm 46:1), the One who could do for them and through them what they could never do on their own. In Jesus, that Helper became visible and tangible. Through His teachings, healings, prayers, and intimate relationship with the Father, He helped people see truth, experience deliverance, and walk in healing and freedom.
In essence, He helped people see God. And when the time came for Him to return to heaven, He assured His friends, then and now, that in His absence He would send a Helper, One who would not only be with them but would live through them.
Who He Is
The Helper, also called the Counselor, Comforter, or Advocate in other translations, is the Holy Spirit. This was God’s plan from the beginning: His visible, tangible, dunamis power on display through His people—something we could never manufacture on our own. And of course, God knew this. This is why He sent the Helper.
How He Does This
The Helper is not passive or distant. He is actively at work in the lives of God’s people molding, counseling, guiding, empowering, and directing us.
Here are some of the ways He does this:
He reminds us of Jesus’ words (John 14:26).
He helps us know what to say and when to say it (Luke 12:12).
He empowers us to pray in God’s will (Romans 8:26).
He guides us into truth (John 16:13).
He produces spiritual fruit through us (Galatians 5:22–23).
He emboldens us to witness (Acts 1:8).
He assures us we belong to God (Romans 8:16).
Life can be hard—Jesus told us it would be this way (John 16:33). Sometimes we feel alone in our trials, unsure in our decisions, ill‑equipped in our callings, and unprepared for our journeys. But the truth is we have a Helper now and always. And greater is He within us than any feeling, circumstance, insecurity, or uncertainty we face.
This is not only outstanding news, it is the truth. We are not left to figure life out on our own. We have a Helper, the Spirit of Jesus, who lives in us, works through us, and will be with us, now and always.
Pray
Father God, thank You for sending the Helper to be with me and to live through me. Please empower me to walk faithfully, courageously, and purposefully with You and before others. Amen.
