This Gift is for You
“Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift He promised…” (Acts 1:4 NLT)
Giving gifts is one of life’s joys. Yet finding just the right one can be challenging. We choose what we think is best, hoping we’ve chosen well. But with God, it’s completely different. He’s never uncertain about what to give. He knows exactly what we need, and His gifts always flow from His infinite wisdom and perfect love. And without a doubt, His greatest gift to humanity was sending Jesus to be God with us.
So what could possibly exceed this gift? This is exactly what Jesus’ friends were wondering when He told them He would be leaving them. Yet He reassured them that in His absence He would send the promised Gift—a superior gift. And although He would no longer be with them, by the power of His life‑giving Spirit He would now live in them.
About the Gift
Jesus didn’t share many details about this Gift—only that it was coming, and His friends should wait for it. They didn’t know how long they would wait or exactly what they were waiting for. But their questions would be answered on the day the Gift arrived. The truth is some things are best understood through experience and the Gift was certainly one of them.
About That Day
The Gift came in fulfillment of Scripture (Joel 2:28), was promised by Jesus (John 14:16–17 and Acts 1:4), and arrived on Pentecost (Acts 2:1–4). It was the day God’s Spirit came in visible, tangible demonstrations of power as a mighty wind and tongues of fire enabling believers to speak in languages they did not know. It was a God‑sized day, a life‑altering day, empowering ordinary believers to do extraordinary things.
The Gift for Today
Far more than a historic moment to be remembered, Pentecost is a gift for today, a present reality for every believer. It’s a daily invitation to trust Jesus to live His life through us. It’s the Spirit‑empowered life, God’s gift to the church, to you, and to me. And this means we don’t have to strive to accomplish God’s will in our own strength. Our only job is to trust and surrender to Him. His job is everything else.
Yet to be clear, knowing, hearing, or even reading about this Gift is not enough. It doesn’t work that way. We must trust in, believe in, depend on, and rely on this Gift—the promised Gift from our Father, who gives the Holy Spirit to all who simply ask (Matthew 7:11).
Walking in This Gift
Walking in this Gift means living it out one day at a time, one step at a time. Practically, this looks like depending on the Spirit’s power for literally everything including what we think, what we say, how we love, respond, feel, and even how we pray. And when we commit to live this way, to walk this way, and to trust the Spirit wholeheartedly the beautiful result is fruit. Spiritual fruit (Galatians 5:22–23). Lasting fruit. Fruit we are not capable of producing on our own.
So today, let’s remember this Gift. Let’s give thanks for and honor the Father who gave us this Gift. Let’s release and walk confidently in this Gift, given freely, fully, and without limit. It is the gift of God’s beautiful, powerful Holy Spirit. And this Gift is for me. And my friend, this Gift is for you.
Pray
Gracious Father, I am grateful for the gift of Your indwelling Holy Spirit. I acknowledge that this Gift is both a privilege and a responsibility. Help me to depend on this Gift at all times, for all things, and for every reason. Thank You for trusting me with this Gift, and for equipping and empowering me to walk consistently in it. Amen.
Reflect
Where in your life do you most need to lean into the Gift of God’s Spirit, trusting His power instead of your own? And what faith‑filled step will you take to do this?
