Life‑Altering Moments
“Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NLT)
I was on the phone when I glanced at the TV and saw that a plane had just crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers. In an instant, everything shifted—in our nation and in my heart. I hung up the phone, stunned and unable to process what I was seeing. All I wanted was to reach my husband and hold my children, both still in grade school at the time.
There are moments in life—like 9/11—that change us forever. Moments that remind us of the fragility of life. Moments that draw us back to what truly matters. And moments that awaken us to our greatest and most desperate need for God.
Our Own Moments
The fact is, every one of us will face life‑altering moments at some point in our lives. While they may not be on the level of a national crisis, they are no less hurtful, confusing, or frightening. The end of a marriage, the death of a loved one, a frightening diagnosis, or the loss of a job, home, or ministry—these moments touch all of us.
And when they do, we often find ourselves asking the same question: Why? Why do moments like these even happen? It’s a question every heart wrestles with in seasons of pain. Jesus actually told us why. It’s because of where we live—in the world (John 16:33). A world where beauty and brokenness coexist; where loss, pain, uncertainty, and suffering are real.
Yet it is also a world God loves, where His presence is felt and is even more real.
God’s Promises
The assurance of God’s love and presence is a tremendous comfort. Yet it doesn’t lessen the reality or the heartache of life‑altering moments. This is why, especially in times like these, we need to lean into God’s promises that ground us in truth and anchor us in hope. They are recorded in Scripture for everyone, yet they are also personal and profound to each one of us.
Here are just some of God’s many promises that strengthen us when life takes an abrupt, unforeseen, and unwanted turn.
God will help us in times of trouble. (Psalm 46:1)
God will never leave or forsake us. (Hebrews 13:5)
God will strengthen and uphold us. (Isaiah 41:10)
God will keep us in perfect peace. (Isaiah 26:3)
God will surround us with His unfailing love. (Psalm 32:10)
And ultimately one day, God will restore everything that is broken, wipe away every tear we’ve cried, and make all things new.
Final Thoughts
In the aftermath of 9/11, the United States experienced a true revival as many people turned back to God, to prayer, and to the church. It was a beautiful reminder that God uses all things, even tragic things, and works them together for good (Romans 8:28). And while this was a deeply redemptive outcome from a truly horrific event, the good news is we don’t have to, nor should we, wait for tragedy to strike to seek God. Instead, we are invited to seek Him daily—regularly, intentionally, habitually. If we’ll do this, then when, not if, we face life‑altering moments, our faith will not fail, because it is built upon Jesus, our solid Rock.
So perhaps today, spend some time in heartfelt gratitude, knowing that Jesus has overcome the world including every one of your life‑altering moments and that nothing you have faced or ever will face can “separate you from His love” (Romans 8:39).

Father God, I am so grateful for Your faithful presence, perfect peace, and steadfast love. I am strengthened and encouraged knowing You are with me always, including in my life‑altering moments. When my circumstances shift suddenly, empower me by Your Spirit to turn to You first and fast. Thank You for the peace and hope I always have in You and in every season. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
