A Better Way to Work
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29 (NIV)
I hope your work, essentially whatever you do, feels meaningful, brings you joy, connects you to purpose and satisfaction. The truth is work is a gift, something God entrusted to us and created us to do. That being said, work is still work. And whether you work in an office, your home, a ministry, or as a volunteer, some days work feels hard—less like a calling and more like labor. When it does, we can easily become discouraged, worn out, even weary.
Yet this is not a place we have to stay, nor should we. There’s a way out and Scripture shows us this way.
Tucked into Matthew’s Gospel is Jesus’ compassionate invitation—truly a simple two‑step plan outlining a better way to work.
Step One: Come
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
This sounds easy enough: go to Jesus, find rest. Yet sometimes this first step is the hardest. Why? Because it requires honesty, transparency, and vulnerability, something we’re not always willing to do, at least at first. Yet Jesus doesn’t shame or blame us. Instead, He patiently waits for us to come to Him. And when we do, He welcomes us and explains our next step.
Step Two: Yoke
Take my yoke upon you…
While yoking is not something most of us relate to today, it made perfect sense to first‑century Jews living in an agrarian culture. In essence, yoking is the process of joining two animals by a wooden bar so they can carry the weight of their work together rather than alone. This was Jesus’ invitation to His friends then, just as it is for us today.
You see, our work becomes weighty when we try to carry it on our own. But when we yoke ourselves to Jesus, our work becomes lighter, more manageable, more peaceful, even joyful.
This doesn’t mean our work suddenly becomes effortless or easy. But it does mean we no longer shoulder the weight of our work by ourselves. And as a result, we bypass burnout and experience soul rest while working.
So perhaps today, take a little time to consider the way you’re working. Are you laboring on your own? Or are you working together with Jesus? This is a choice only we can make. And the good news? It’s not too late—Jesus’ compassionate invitation still stands: to cease from working on our own and instead come to Him and to yoke with Him. By making this choice, we find rest in Him and discover that His way is truly a better way to work.
Pray
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your standing invitation to come to You, to yoke with You, and to find rest in You. It’s reassuring to know I never have to work alone on my own without You. Help me rely on Your power and Your presence with me, not only on weary days, but every day. I recognize that apart from You I can do nothing (John 15:5), and I’m grateful I never have to try. Amen.
Reflect
What aspect of your work feels the weightiest right now, and how might yoking with Jesus lighten that load?
