What Fall Teaches Us

Nearly five years ago, my husband and I relocated to upstate South Carolina. One of the things we treasure most about our new state is experiencing four distinct seasons—a welcomed change after spending most of our lives in Florida.

While each season carries a lovely uniqueness of its own, fall with its brilliant colors and crisp temperatures is by far our favorite. Yet not just for its beauty, but also for what it teaches us. Scripture tells us that God speaks through creation (Psalm 19:1-4), and this includes the seasons He’s made. This is why we are wise to pay attention, as there is a good deal we can learn from the season of fall.

1. Fall teaches us that seasons are purposeful. (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

Seasons aren’t random or happenstance. They are ordered, structured, timed, and orchestrated by an all‑wise and loving God.

2. Fall teaches that wisdom is required for beautiful moments. (Psalm 90:12)

Fall is an invitation to live presently and pay attention. Because if we’re distracted, preoccupied, or overly busy, we might miss the beauty of the season altogether. And honestly, that would be sad, because fall only comes once a year.

3. Fall teaches us that beauty is sometimes messy. (Proverbs 14:4)

As beautiful as the fall leaves are, they eventually fall to the ground — that’s reality. At this point we have a choice. We can spend all our energies raking, sweeping, and bagging them. Or, far better, we can enjoy and embrace them — mess and all.

4. Fall teaches us that growth requires perseverance, patience, and prayer.

(James 5:7; Galatians 6:9)

Just as pumpkins grow over time, leaves change gradually, and mums begin from the tiniest seed, so also personal, spiritual, and relational growth takes time to develop. And for this we need perseverance to prevail, patience to wait, and prayer as our lifeline to God.

5. Fall teaches us that there is a greater harvest than the one we can see. (John 4:35)

In the same way the physical fields are abundant with seasonal crops ready to be harvested, the spiritual fields are ripe with people. People that Jesus loves. People He calls us to notice. And people that need to hear His Gospel.

6. Fall teaches us that unlike the changing seasons, God’s Word remains the same. (Isaiah 40:8)

The fact is, everything and everyone will eventually change. Yet God’s Word never will. It is timeless, eternal, proven, and trustworthy. It’s the one thing Jesus said would never change (Matthew 24:35).

7. Fall teaches us that God makes everything beautiful—yet not in our time, rather His. (Ecclesiastes 3:11)

In our humanness, we often want instant everything–including beauty. Yet realizing beauty is a process we cannot rush. But God is faithful. And in His time, He will take the things in our lives—and in our world—that are anything but lovely and make them beautiful.

How gracious is God to help us see and experience spiritual truths through the things He’s made. His messages are embedded in His creation everywhere, all around us. Yet they’re not just given for us to admire and appreciate. Instead, like the season of fall, they’re beautiful pictures, true gifts from Him that we can learn from and live by.

Pray

Holy Father, thank You for the beautiful season of fall and for the way You use it to teach me spiritual truths. Open my eyes to see the powerful lessons embedded in everything You’ve made. When I get distracted, empower me by Your Spirit to redirect my attention to Your Word and Your works. Although I see changes around me regularly—in the seasons, in people, and in the world—I am encouraged, knowing You are the one constant: never changing, completely trustworthy, forever faithful God. Amen.

Reflect

Which of the seven lessons from the season of fall is God inviting you to pay attention to right now? What steps will you take to respond to Him with trust and faith?
