The Author of Every Story

…Even before I was born, you had written in your book everything about me. Psalm 139:16 (CEV)

I love a good story—don’t you? Especially the ones filled with meaning and purpose, the kind that inspire and leave us feeling hopeful. In fact, just this past month, I was blessed by several impactful life stories at a writers’ conference, from individuals in my community group, and most recently over coffee with a new believer. And while each of these stories is wonderfully unique, they all share a common thread: that moment when their lives intersected with God—the Author of every story.

Everyone Has a Story

The truth is, every one of us has a story authored by God before we were born (Psalm 139:16). A story fully realized in a personal relationship with Jesus, who transforms our lives into stories of grace, redemption, and purpose. A story God is faithful to direct and redirect as needed. And a story that He, as Author, is still writing and has promised to complete (Philippians 1:6).

Why This Matters

Understanding this matters because it reminds us that our lives are not random or happenstance. Instead, we’re living providentially inside a narrative God Himself is shaping. This gives us clarity about our purpose, confidence in His leading, and hope in the chapters that feel confusing and uncertain. Knowing God is both the Author, and the Finisher of our story strengthens our resolve and helps us trust Him with every page of our story.

What About the Hard Chapters?

The fact is hard chapters are a part of everyone’s story. And while God is good and does good, He often uses things that are not good to accomplish His eternal plan. The stories in Scripture confirm this. Joseph, Naomi, David, Job, and ultimately Jesus all walked through dark seasons that God used and transformed into good. The same is true for us. God never wastes a hard chapter. In truth, they are purposeful—and become beautiful—when surrendered to Him in trust and faith. Even when we cannot see the outcome, we can trust that the Author of every story is present with us in our hard chapters, using them for our good, His honor, and the benefit of others.

God’s Gift to Us

Our stories are God’s gift to us, something we often can’t see in the moment. Yet with time, experience, and intentional reflection, we begin to recognize that every word, page, and chapter has been lovingly orchestrated by God, who graciously chose us in Christ and has included us in His forever story. Our stories are our witness. Our stories are our testimony. Our stories are strategic weapons that silence the enemy’s lies. Our stories are a vital part of who we are. Our stories are purposeful and powerful—they are God’s gifts to us. And He has entrusted us with the privilege of sharing our stories with others so they too can know Him, the Author of every story.

So perhaps today, take a few moments to thank God for the story He is writing through your life. Then pray and be sensitive to the opportunities He provides to share your story, even a chapter or two, with others who need to hear it.

Pray

Father God, I am humbled that You have chosen to write my story. Thank You for the grace, mercy, redemption, healing, and purpose You have scripted into every chapter of my life. Help me trust You with the pages that feel hard and the ones still unfinished. Teach me to live on mission with You, in tune with Your Spirit, sensitive to the opportunities You provide to share my story with others, so they too can know You, the Author of every story. Amen.

Reflect

Which chapter of your story is God inviting you to trust Him with and how might He be prompting you to share even a part of that story with someone who needs encouragement?
