Trusting the God of the Daily
Thanks be to the Lord, who daily carries our burdens for us. (Psalm 68:19 GW)
Recently, something came up that I wasn’t expecting. It wasn’t something bad, per se. In fact, it could even turn out to be good. Still, it wasn’t something I had planned for. Life is like this—unpredictable. Yet this shouldn’t surprise us. Jesus said life in this world would be just like this. But He also said we could always have peace in Him (John 16:33). And this includes all of our “unexpecteds”.
Yet sadly, our first response to the unknown, rather than peace, is often to mentally cycle through a list of “what ifs,” which isn’t healthy or helpful. So then, how should we respond to what we do not yet know or cannot see?
The answer, both simple and profound, is this: We choose to trust the God of the daily.
What Does This Mean?
Trusting the God of the daily means recognizing that He is with us today. Yes, He was with us in our past, and He will be with us in our future, but we walk with Him in the present. “This is why we can’t dwell on the past or borrow tomorrow’s trouble” (Matthew 6:34).
God is with us now, in our “daily.” This is where we receive new morning mercies (Lamentations 3:23), present help and strength (Psalm 46:1), and a fresh supply of all we need (Matthew 6:11).
Leaping into tomorrow or lingering in yesterday can easily lead to anxiety, discouragement, worry, and fear. But when we choose to walk with God in daily dependence, we experience His presence with us — and this leads to deeper trust, resilient hope, and stronger faith in Him.
What Happens When We Forget
There’s a reason the Bible speaks repeatedly of remembering God—His mercy and His faithfulness. You see when we forget Him, we can easily slip into an orphan mentality. And this is exactly what happened to the children of Israel in the wilderness. Instead of trusting their good Father in the present, they longed for the perceived comfort and familiarity of the past. Sadly, this choice added needless decades to their journey in the wilderness, where they all eventually died. Yet their tragic ending could have been avoided had they chosen to trust the God of the daily
How Do We Do This?
Trusting the God of the daily begins with acknowledging that He is, in fact, completely trustworthy. It’s the humble posture that recognizes Him as the Shepherd and us as dependent sheep. It requires leaning on His wisdom rather than our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5). It’s also a commitment to remember His character, His promises, and His past faithfulness. But most significantly, it’s the choice to release every unknown, every burden, and every “what if” to Him and to trust Him as the God of the daily.
So perhaps today, consider where you are with God. Are you lingering in the past, striving toward the future, or walking with Him in the present? The good news is we don’t have to wait for “someday.” We can meet Him in the “now” day—trusting Him as the God of the daily.
Pray
Father God, I’m so grateful that You meet me each day with new mercies and a fresh supply of all that I need. I recognize that there is no grace for me in the places I once was or in the ones I will someday be — but there is abundant grace for me in the here and now. Because of this, I choose to walk with You each day, trusting You as the God of my daily. You are entirely faithful, and I am incredibly thankful. Amen.
