Mighty God
For a child is born to us…And he will be called…Mighty God… (Isaiah 9:6 NLT).
Who was that one person who made you feel safe when you were growing up? Maybe a parent, a grandparent, or someone you knew you could always depend on. Regardless of age or maturity, the truth is none of us outgrow the need to know there’s someone in our corner. By this I mean someone bigger and stronger than we are. Someone who will fight our battles. Someone who will defend, protect, and rescue us. Whether or not you’ve had this kind of person in your life, if you follow Christ, you now have Jesus—who is, in fact, our Mighty God.
Yahweh as Mighty God
“Great is our Lord and mighty in power….” Psalm 147:5 NIV
From the earliest days, the Israelites knew Yahweh as the One whose mighty acts set them apart from all other nations. For the sake of His glory—and on their behalf—He parted the Red Sea, brought down Jericho’s walls, and delivered them from their enemies. His might was their source of confidence and their distinguishing mark as His covenant people. Truly, no other god could compare to Yahweh, the Mighty God. And this same God who acted powerfully for His people then continues to do so today.
Jesus, the Mighty God
I find it incredible that the promised Mighty God chose to come to earth as baby Jesus—fragile, dependent, and vulnerable. Yet as He grew, His mighty acts testified that He was indeed who He claimed to be: the Mighty God in the flesh.
As the Mighty God, Jesus calmed raging seas, cast out demons, healed the sick, walked on water, and even raised the dead. But His mighty acts were never meant to showcase strength alone. They were expressions of His love—a mighty love ultimately revealed through His death on the cross, His victory over sin, and His resurrection from the grave.
Knowing Jesus as Mighty God
To know Jesus as Mighty God is to live with unshakable confidence. Yet not because of anything we’ve ever done or could do, but because He is with us. When we fully grasp this truth—that the Mighty God of the universe is with us—we experience strength in times of weakness, renewal when we feel weary, and hope when facing defeat.
To know Jesus as Mighty God is to know the one true God who fights our battles, carries our burdens, and empowers us to live fearlessly, courageously, and effectively in this world.
Courage for Today
And this brings us to today. The truth is we all face battles on many fronts and will continue to do so throughout our lifetime. But the good news of Christmas—and for us personally—is this: we do not face them alone. The child Isaiah prophesied would be born to us has come and He is our Mighty God (Isaiah 9:6).
This means that whatever threatens to overwhelm, overtake, or overpower us simply cannot. Jesus, our Mighty God, has won the victory. And because we belong to Him, that victory is ours.
So, my friend, in whatever challenges you and I may be facing, we can take courage knowing that Jesus, our Mighty God, is with us. While we are powerless on our own apart from Him (John 15:5), we are more than conquerors through Him (Romans 8:37). Knowing and believing this makes all the difference in how we perceive our challenges and face our battles.
Pray
Father God, thank You for sending Jesus to be my Mighty God. I take courage knowing that His presence is with me, His power upholds me, and His love will never fail me. I am so grateful that, as my Mighty God, Jesus has purchased my salvation, secured my freedom, and won every battle I will ever face. And for all of this—and endlessly more—I say thank You, Father, for being so good. Amen
